CHAPTER FILES



A chapter should keep in the chapter files:

    1. Minutes of all chapter meetings. (The recording secretary should provide a duplicate copy to the incoming president as soon as possible after each meeting.)

    Original copies of the minutes should be permanently bound periodically. (Do not keep in loose-leaf notebooks.)

    Do not separate a biennium.

    2. One or two copies of each yearbook published by the chapter.

    3. Membership information may be kept on cards, as a list, or in a file folder. It should contain:

    a. Names of women who have ever been chapter members. Some
    chapters have a folder on each member containing such items as their
    Recommendation of New Member form, an official transfer form, (either
    into or out of the chapter) and any other desired materials.

    b. A listing of members lost: date and reason

    c. List of women who declined membership and reason given.

    4. Chapter Charter

    5. Financial records for several years. (Treasurer should give the president and recording
    secretary a duplicate copy of the monthly and annual report).

    6. Copies of Our Heritage (Vols. I and II), Our Golden Anniversary, 1929-1979, and
    The First Fifty Years, Chi State, 1931-1981

    7. Chapter History (prepared, updated and added to each year.)

    8. Chapter Profile (to be prepared each year and placed in the file)

    9. Copy of Chapter Standing Rules.

    10. Chapter Newsletters.

CHI STATE HISTORICAL TIMELINE




1929   Delta Kappa Gamma Society was founded in Austin, Texas by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton with purposes
centering around the elimination of discrimination within the teaching profession

1936 On Thanksgiving Day, Chi State was chartered as the twenty-second state in the Society, electing
Dr. Madeline Veverka its first State President.

1937 On November 27 the first Chi State Convention, hosted by Alpha Chapter, was held at the Huntington
Hotel in Pasadena.

1941 Dr. Madilene Veverka became second vice-president of the National Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

1942 The first Chi State Scholarship was named the Dr. Madilene Veverka Scholarship. During the 1940’s
four scholarships in the amount of $100 each were awarded annually.

1947 The Chi State Letters and Publications published its first Newsletter.

1950 The title of the Newsletter was changed to THE CHI STATE NEWS.

1953 The Delta Kappa Gamma Society became international with the establishment of a chapter in
British Columbia, Canada.

1956 The debt-free International Headquarters was dedicated in Austin, Texas with J. Maria Pierce, a
past Chi State President, and at that time the National President, presiding at the ceremony.

1960 The Chi State World Fellowship Program was established.

1961 San Francisco was the host city for Chi State’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. The theme,
“ Exploring Inner Space,” emphasized building bridges of understanding with other peoples and with
one’s inner image.

1968 Beatrice O”Brien, Chi State President, was instrumental in preserving Purpose Four: “To initiate,
endorse and support desirable legislation in the interest of women educators,” at the
International Convention in New York.

1969 The Platform for the Legislative Program was approved at the Chi State Convention. The first
Legislative Consultant/Advocate was hired.

1970 The Society expanded into Europe. Chi State provided finances to establish Alpha Chapter, Norway.

1970 A Chi State Office was established in Sacramento with a part-time paid secretary.

1970 Five $2,000 scholarships were granted at the Chi State Convention.

1971 The number of Chi State Areas changed from thirteen to sixteen as geographical areas were
realigned.

1973 Marjorie J. Allen, Past Chi State President, was the Southwest Regional Director, when Chi State
hosted the Southwest Regional conference at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

1974 The first annual Legislative Study Session was held in Sacramento.

1974 Chi State assisted the International Society with the chartering of Alpha Chapter, Alpha State,
Mexico D.F.

1978 Chi State sponsored Alpha Chapter in Beta State, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

1980 A study was begun to purchase a building to house all Chi State records, office equipment,
and space for committee meetings.

1981 The Leadership Development Seminar was inaugurated at the University of Pacific in Stockton.

1982 A Financial Development Plan was begun for the support of Programs in Chi State.

1983 Annual presentation of Achievement Awards was begun:
*Service to Chi State
*Service to the educational profession
*Service to the community
1983 The Executive Board made the decision to purchase an office in Sacramento.

1984 On June 22, 1984, an airspace office building was purchased near California State University
at 808 University Ave. Later, the office was named the Chi State Education Center.

1986 Chi State celebrated its 50th Birthday at the Sheraton Plaza La Reine Hotel in Los Angeles.
Our Golden Heritage, A Legacy of Leadership,” was the theme of International President Jessie
Sim’s speech at the banquet.

1988 Chi State Traveling Workshops were taken to the Areas, replacing State Seminars and Workshops.

1988 A Legislative Hotline was put into operation.

1988 The $300,000 goal for the Education Center was met and Chi State Education Center became debt-free .

1989 A State Membership Task Force was organized. The Order of the Rose was created to stimulate
action in acquiring new chapter members.

1993 A new position of Executive Secretary was established on the Executive Committee. The President
makes the appointment and assigns tasks to facilitate the committee’s operation.

1993 Some Areas were restructured and another Area was added, making seventeen Areas in Chi State.

1994 Chi State recognized Delaine Eastin, California Superintendent of Public Education, with Honorary
Membership in our Society.

1995 Chi State hosted the Southwest Regional Conference at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco.

1997 Chi State Executive Board voted to establish “The Chi State Learning is for Everyone (LIFE)
Foundation.

1997 State helped with the founding of Delta State and Alpha Chapter in Baja, California.

2000 State Honor Chapter Criteria was expanded to comprise 5 categories:

*Communication
*Finances
*Membership
*Service

2001 Chi State assisted International in the chartering of Beta Chapter, Delta State, Baja, California.
The ceremonies were conducted in Spanish by the International President, Carol Mueller.
